2 Peter 3:
3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers,
walking after their own lusts,
4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming?
for since the fathers fell asleep,
all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.
5 For this they willingly are ignorant of,
that by the word of God the heavens were of old,
and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:
6 Whereby the world that then was,
being overflowed with water, perished:

The ancient Epicurean philosophers believed in the natural generation of living creatures out of earth materials. The idea of randomly colliding atoms falling into order and the pattern that is our world is as old as the ancient Roman Lucretius. Anaximander taught that men evolved from animals. Plato and Aristotles Great Chain of Being, the endless genealogies, influenced official church doctrine and the development of the modern theory of evolution. Theologians and scientists of the Middle Ages got their concept of a geocentric, three-storied universe from Plato and Aristotle, not the Bible. Copernicus and Galileo had to overcome these pagan ideas imbedded in church theology to get church leaders and lay people to believe the earth and planets revolve around the sun. Both men believed the Bible.
In the early 1800s the idea that the rock layers formed over long periods of time became popular. The leaders of this trend had not been trained as scientists in the modern sense. Darwin was an apostate divinity student. Lyell was a lawyer. Wallace had no higher formal education, and was devoted to the occult. Only Lamarck and Haeckel had bona fide educations in the branches of evolutionary science they pursued. Lamarcks idea of how traits are inherited has been disproved. Haeckels drawings of embryonic recapitulation have been proven to be deliberate frauds. Most of the genuine scientists of that day Faraday, Pasteur, Cuvier, Brewster, Maxwell, Joule, Sedgwick- among others either opposed evolution or remained aloof, and their discoveries still work. Pasteur proved spontaneous generation does not happen.
Leading theologians such as Kinglsey, Drummond, and Beecher quickly accepted the long ages of evolution. They reinterpreted the Bible to fit these eons of time into the Bible text. They abandoned the straight forward reading of Genesis. The intellectual community followed these ministers. People began to believe that processes occurring at the same rate we see them today formed geography over vast periods of time. This is the principle of uniformitarianism.
Over the next decades theologians came up with various compromises to make the Bible fit in with the current secular ideas. They invented a gap between the first two verses of the Bible to accommodate vast ages required for evolution. They accused God of using millions of years of death and suffering to create living things. They ignored Romans 5:12 when it said death entered the world only after Adam sinned, and thus fossils could not have formed before. They said the Bible was not reliable history, and the creation story was only the poetry of a shepherd. The Flood of Noah became just a local flood.
Once the straight forward reading of Genesis was abandoned, the Bible became disconnected from real history in the minds of following generations. Most Sunday School teachers still teach Bible stories and morality, but not geology or biology. But their students believe a non-Biblical history, biology and geology. Each generation of students has become more consistent in realizing that if the first page of the Bible is wrong or too obscure to properly understand, they cannot trust the rest of it about morality and salvation. Of teenagers involved in church youth groups, most walk away from church soon after they leave school.
Reasoning and proof in logic begin with an assumption that the beginning axiom is true. A scientist who assumes evolution is true sees a fossil and his assumption is that it slowly formed millions of years ago. A scientist who assumes creation sees the same fossil, but comes to a different conclusion. Both are looking at a dead bone from the past and must build on the same evidence. Neither can perform a controlled experiment on the past, because both are stuck in the present. They see layers of upright petrified logs at places like Yellowstone and come to different conclusions. But both got to observe how rapidly geologic formations occurred when Mount Saint Helens exploded and upright floating logs settled into layers. Both find a dinosaur fossil so fresh the DNA has not degraded. It had to be buried rapidly to avoid falling apart in decay.
Astronomers see evidence for a global flood on Mars. They are searching for where the water went. Many scientists deny a world-wide flood could have ever happened on earth. They ask, Where did the water go? Water covers 70% of the earth. If the ocean floor rose and the mountains sank to the same level, water would cover the earth to a depth of 2.7 kilometers.
